The Échappée Jurassienne Tour starts in Dole, France. Jura Tourisme has concocted a made-to-measure programme for hardy ramblers with baggage transfer each day. That way, you can rest assured and enjoy the magnificent natural sites throughout the marked trails, taking you from marvels to natural and cultural exceptional locations! Your journey will end in Lons-le-Saunier, where a shuttle awaits you to take you back to the starting point.
The package includes:
Arrival at 08:00 in Dole. Transfer from Dole to ‘La Vielle Loye’, a small lumberjack town in the heart of the ‘Forêt de Chaux’, the second largest public forest in France. Onto Arc-et-Senans for a rest at the Saline Royale, classified UNESCO World Heritage site. The masterpiece of the architect Claude Nicolas LEDOUX, this salt production site was built between 1775 and 1779 under the orders of Louis XV. Dinner and overnight at the chosen accommodation. (Bed & Breakfast or 3*** hotel)
Rambling distance: following the transfer, 16.5 km trek – Approx 4 hours 10 minutes – Alt. difference 95m.
After breakfast, follow the meandering Loue River banks through the villages of Port-Lesney, Rennes-sur-Loue, La Chapelle-sur-Furieuse, onto the ‘Voie Verte’ through the vineyards. You will arrive in Salins-les-Bains, location of the second site of the ‘White Gold’, the Grande Saline, also classified UNESCO World Heritage site. You can visit the impressive Romanesque style underground galleries, and the ‘Musée du Sel’ which is a good extension of the visit. You can also take a break at the Spa, with their naturally salted water. Check-in to your accommodation. Dinner and overnight in a 3*** hotel.
Trek 22.5 km – Approx 6 hours – Alt. difference 483m.
After breakfast, departure from Salins-les-Bains up to the ‘Fort Saint-André’, then back down to Pretin through to Montigny-les-Arsures with its 18th Century Church, and the 15th Century Château. Down through the vineyards to Arbois and arrival in the ‘Pays du Revermont’. Wander through the streets to admire the stone houses and monuments among the Cuisance River banks. A wine tasting rest is essential in one of the numerous wine cellars! If you have time, you can visit the ‘Maison Pasteur’, home and laboratory of the World-famous scientist Louis PASTEUR, or the ‘Musée de la Vigne et du Vin’ that invites you to discover the history of wine in this small region. Check-in to a 3*** hotel. Dinner in a nearby restaurant and overnight in Arbois.
Trek 19.5 km – Approx 6.5 hours – Alt. difference 890m.
After breakfast, departure from Arbois to visit the steep-head Valley at ‘Les Planches-près-Arbois’. Amongst the vineyards, through a number of vintner villages, and enjoy the magnificent panoramas from the ‘Belvédères’ at the ‘Roche du Feu’, and the ‘Cirque du Fer à Cheval’. Arrival in Pupillin capital of the Poulsard cépage, vintner village ‘de charactère’ where you can taste the Jura wines. Check-in at your Bed & Breakfast accommodation. Dinner and overnight in Pupillin.
Trek 21 km – Approx 6.5 hours – Alt. difference 891m.
After breakfast departure from Pupillin down to Poligny, capital of Comté cheese, nestled at the foot of the high plateau. This town has the national School of the Milk Industry and Biotechnologies’, the ‘Maison du Comté’ and the vestiges of the ‘Château de Grimont’, then onto Passenans. Check-in to your accommodation, 3*** hotel. Dinner and overnight in Passenans.
Trek 5.5 km – Approx 6.5 hours – Alt. difference 840m.
The longest stretch of the circuit.
After breakfast, departure for a long day of rambling between vineyards and some of the most beautiful villages in France, passing through Frontenay with its Mediaeval Château, then onto Château-Chalon, capital of Vin Jaune, and classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, perched on a horseshoe rock outreach over the Vallée de la Seille. Down to the Blois-sur-Seille steep-head valley, onto the Granges-sur-Baume belvédère for a jaw-dropping view over Baume-les-Messieurs, another one of the most beautiful villages in France set within the steep-head valley, with a 9th Century Benedictine Abbey. Check-in to your accommodation (unclassified hotel). Dinner and overnight in Baume-les-Messieurs. Trek 24 km – Approx 7.45 hours – Alt. difference 990m.
After breakfast, departure to Lons-le-Saunier, the Jura Department ‘Préfecture’ where you will have the choice of a small rest at the Spa, or a visit to the ‘Maison de la Vache-qui-Rit’. Return transfer to Dole. Trek 11 km – Approx 3 hours – Alt. difference 134m.
